Ruby Hornsby defended her philosophy PhD in November 2025 (Leeds University) which addressed the question: Can humans and robots be friends?

She is currently a part-time postgraduate researcher for The Ethical Dating Online Project: A network of academics, industry professionals and charities working together to make online dating safer and more fulfilling. Our edited collection: The Ethics of Online Dating: Navigating Intimacy in a world of AI, Apps and Avatars is forthcoming in 2026.

Ruby is the founder of Wiser Debate Club, a philosophical debate club for people aged 65+ in Leeds, which has recently been awarded funding to expand to other UK cities.

Future Events

 1. Public Event at Hyde Park Picture House Cinema (Leeds): Screening of Spike Jonze's Her (2013) as part of the Philosophy & Film Series. After the film, I will talk about the ethics of human-AI relationships and address audience questions. 12th February 2026.  Information and Tickets Available Here.

2. Academic Event hosted by The University of Sheffield and The University of Manchester (Sheffield). Workshop: Philosophical Conceptions of Autonomy in Human-AI Teaming. 19th and 20th March 2026.
